Preparing the space

"It’s OK not to want to talk about death… every person will deal with it differently… some pupils might find it more difficult than others"

Time out area - A go-to space to take a few moments for anyone feeling overwhelmed. Could this be created within the room or a separate safe space nearby?

Additional adults - to contribute, step in or provide a listening ear as support for pupils as well as other staff members. All adults should be aware of the content in advance, feel confident to support pupils and be able to contribute, if needed.

Expectations - outline what is going to be discussed and highlight:

  • The need to be sensitive to the reactions of others.
  • That the subject of death can be difficult to talk about.
  • Where they can go if they need time out.
  • Who is available to offer support.
  • How they can access support subsequently, if needed.
