Managing emotions when teaching about death and bereavement
"Young people can do the same and that will help them to understand how to manage when feelings overwhelm them"
It can be difficult to see someone upset or crying, and pupils may feel worried or upset if an adult in school becomes emotional. It will help to reassure the pupils that this reaction is a natural response and that you will feel better soon. Other adults can step in to help to reassure pupils and suggest what may help:
- Accepting the emotional reaction.
- Taking some slow, deep breaths.
- Sitting quietly for a moment.
- Having a glass of water.
- Talking to someone or having someone sit with them.
